Family Card games are great for small and large groups of people to play. When we have parties, these are some of our favorites – especially Apples to Apples and Whoonu. Take a look at this list and see if any of these would fit your family.
Apples to Apples
Apples to Apples is one of our family favorite games. It’s a card game that displays comparisons between people, places, and events. Fast moving, this is great for 4-15 players. Suggested age 10 to adult.
WhooNu
Whoonu is played by 3-6 players. It’s a card game where you earn chips based on how well you know your friend’s favorite and least favorite things. Each player is dealt 4 cards with a variety of things, places and people on them. For example Super Bowl Sunday, New York City, string cheese and gardening.
Your job is to turn in a card that the Whoonuzit (judge) is going to like the most. The judge’s first choice earns 6 points; the second choice earns 5 points and so forth.
It’s hilarious to watch the judge evaluate each card and put them in their preferred order. It generates some astonishing insights into what our friends and family really appreciate. The player who accumulates the highest value in chips by the time everyone has been the Whoonuzit wins the game.
Gameplay can take between 15 minutes and 45 minutes depending on how many players there are and how much you laugh. We love this game — it’s great for ages 6 and up and a good way to spend an afternoon getting to know.
Mille Bornes
Mille Bornes is one of the first deck games created – and it’s a lot of fun. For up to 6 players – ages 8 to adult. You must travel 1,000 miles with your partner, traveling imaginary roads and dodging the hazards placed in your path. There are also trump cards to play along the way that makes this game really fun. There were several teens in our son’s scout troop who loved playing this game, it crosses all age barriers.
Pit
Pit is a fun card game for up to 7 (seven) people. Trading commodities such as wheat, oats, flax, corn, rye, barley and hay. It’s fast-moving and tons of fun.

Uno
Uno is a very simple card game that anyone from 3 years old to 80 years old can play. With colors red, yellow, blue and green and number from 0 (zero) to 9, any size group can play this. From 2 players to 10 players this game is tons of fun and super easy to learn. We’ve been playing this game since the early 80’s and it’s still a favorite.
We do have our own personalized rules . . . we call them “dump on your neighbor.” When someone plays a draw two on you, you can multiply it by playing a draw two on top of it . . . the next person has to pick up four cards (or more). We have another rule: If you don’t have a card to play, you get to draw from the pile until you find a card to play . . . we all count out loud as the player picks up card after card . . . sometimes up to 10 cards before being able to play. Definitely not for the faint of heart!
Waterworks
Waterworks is a terrific card game that challenges the players to build a water pipeline. For 2-5 players for ages 5 and above. There are offensive and defensive cards (like leaky pipes) to make the game interesting as you connect the faucet to the spout card.
